Sonnet/ Everything about sonnet/ Sonnet discussed in detail/ Kinds of sonnet/ Petrarchan sonnet/ Spenserian sonnet/ Shakespearean sonnet/ Volta/ Rhyme schemes of various or different kinds of sonnet/ Iambic feet in sonnet/ Which prosody does a sonnet normally consist of?
We all have come across
a great number of poetic forms till date. However, there are various names that
sometimes sound tongue twisting also. So, today, why don’t we discuss about
sonnet in detail?
Hailing from Italy,
sonnet is actually a form of poetry or verse. Apart from that, we must know
that such a form of poetry is usually a poem having fourteen lines. Moreover,
it must be noted that each line of a sonnet generally consists of five iambic
feet. Anyway, a Volta must be there in a sonnet to create a turning
point.Anyway, a Volta must be
there in a sonnet to create a turning point. That is to say, for
instance, in a sonnet, the first eight lines may have questions only, but the
rest of the poem answers them all. Likewise, we get a turning point somewhere
in between the octet and the sestet in a sonnet normally.
Now, what is an iambic
foot? We need to know that first of all. When an unaccented or unstressed
syllable is followed by a stressed or an accented one, it becomes an iambus or
an iambic foot.
Now, let us discuss it a
bit more with the aid of examples or the help of instances.
When we pronounce the
word “recall”, we should mark and keep it in mind that the mentioned word
consists of two syllables—“re” and “call”. Again, in this case, “re” is not given
the stress or accent. Hence, it is an unstressed or unaccented syllable. On the
other hand, “call” is given the stress or accent. Therefore, it is a stressed
or accented syllable. It is interesting to note that “call” is the kernel word,
whereas “re” is a prefix.
It is time to return to
the main discussion. In the light of this thought, we must mention that sonnet
may have three sub-genres. What are they? They are as the following:
a. Petrarchan
sonnet: This kind of sonnet has an octet and a sestet. While the octet or
octave bears a comparison, the sestet brings out the true meaning by throwing
light upon the entire comparison. In short, we get to know the matter clarified
with the help of the sestet. Such type of sonnet contains the rhyme scheme of
either abba abba cde cde or abba abba cd cd cd or abba abba cce dde or abba
abba cdd cee.
b. b. Spenserian sonnet: This kind of sonnet comprises
three quatrains and a concluding couplet. Hence, its rhyme scheme is abab bcbc
cdcd ee.
c. Shakespearean
sonnet: Such kind of sonnet generally composes of three quatrains along
with a rhymed couplet having the rhyme scheme of abab cdcd efef gg. Also, we
should note that the lines of this kind of sonnet are written in iambic
pentameter.
